A new report compares the New Zealand and Australian contexts surrounding the development of plastic packaging product stewardship schemes as well as a comparison of similarities and differences between the two countries.

The research, commissioned by the PPPS project team, considered the regulatory framework, relevant parties, scheme design and implementation and other contributing factors such as kerbside collection harmonisation.

The geographic proximity and mutual recognition trade arrangements of Australia and New Zealand encourages an aligned approach to plastic packaging management. However, differences in government structure, legislation, targets, approaches, and relevant parties, will lead to variations in product stewardship schemes between the two countries. This report supports the co-design process of the Plastic Packaging Product Stewardship Scheme (PPPS), and in engaging with stakeholders and government in discussions about these differences.

The research was conducted by MRA Consulting.
